DIY Valentine's Day Sensory Rice

Valentine's Day Sensory Rice

Like most of my themed posts, this is not secluded to just Valentine's Day. Simply change the colors and you have an activity that works all year round. I however have an obsession with holiday themed things so I just knew I had to take our new sensory obsession to another level.

What you'll need:
- 1 gallon Ziploc bags (3)
-12 cups of white rice
-9 tablespoons of hand sanitizer
-yellow food coloring
-red food coloring

I wanted to have red, pink, and coral rice. Start by putting 4 cups of rice in each of the Ziploc bags. Then add in your 3 tablespoons of hand sanitizer in each bag. For your pink bag you'll just want to add a few drops of red...no more than 5. Seal your bag and give it a good mix. For the coral bag you'll want to do the same amount of red as your pink bag but then add 2 or 3 drops of your yellow. And of course for your red bag you'll just want to add a lot of the red dye. I used 10 drops in mine to begin with and had to go back and add more in the bag after mixing because it wasn't as vibrant as I was hoping.

Once you've got all of your rice mixed really well in each bag take them out of the bag to spread out in a cookie sheet to fully dry. It dries pretty quick, however the sanitizer smell can still be a little overwhelming so I left mine to dry out over night.

Transfer your rice over to a sensory bin or any larger container you have and add some things to play with in the rice. For a tutorial of the craft sticks click here. Enjoy and have fun playing with your kiddos. Happy Valentine's Day!
